This was the first indicator there was a problem with the heater. This tube feeds natural gas to the pilot light burner, and it has a gaping hole in the side. One day we came out to the garage and found a flame burning along the tube, outside the firebox / heat exchanger. When we finally took this tube out, I put it in the sink and blew air through it underwater. There was actually three BIG holes in the side of it and barely any gas actually came out the burner where it was supposed to! It was actually a good thing that the gas leaking from this tube caught fire and was burned off the way it was or else the buildup of unburnt gas could have caused an explosion!
