Shoulder Rides
Things I've Learned From My Father
A Father-Son tradition: The Shoulder Ride

My father often tells of a time when I used to ride King of the World style on his shoulders. In fact, I can vividly recall the sensation, the smell of his Head and Shoulders shampoo, the bouncing and jostling, the view. However, one detail in his stories as he tells them now is just how much it hurt for this wee tot of two to be clinging to his curly hair. Fortunately, my hairstyle prevents similar injuries from occurring while joyously trotting about with my own son perched upon my shoulders. He, however, has solved this lack-of-grip problem by grabbing hold of the largest object he can find: my nose.
