Words While Waiting

Ramblings from the waiting room
It's Thursday. I'm sitting in the waiting room of an auto glass shop. The outer cinderblock wall has been painted a beige color that doesn't quite match the other walls in the room which are more of a brown. A couple of flourescent lights hang from the ceiling beams above which have all been painted flat black that seems to make them disappear. There are a few blue chairs situated around a black coffee table with magazines and newspapers from several days ago. A green leafy plant is leaning towards the window. There's an M & M machine in the corner with a blue M & M character smiling and waving inside. The lady at the counter is named Karen and she has been very helpful, not only to us but also to the half dozen or so customers who have come and gone while I've been sitting here. Her voice sounds like Kathleen Maddigan's. The other day one of the girls thought it would be a good idea to try to throw a rock across the street, but instead ended up hitting the side window of our van, completely shattering it. I never imagined I'd have to deal with broken windows with girls, but they are full of surprises. I had another good chuckle the other day when the four-year-old was having breakfast. Very matter—of—factly she said "I want chocolate milk on my cereal but I know that's not going to happen." What four year old says things like that? They are both so smart it's mind boggling.

I ordered Insteon devices yesterday to completely retrofit all the switches and some of the plugs in my new house. Now the wait is on, although I paid the extra nine dollars to have them shipped 1-3 Day Air. I'm hoping they'll arrive tomorrow, but suppose next week is more reasonable. I started tackling the basement last night as my project nerve has been starting to itch. I Shot the Sheriff is playing on the radio in the corner beside three fake flowers in a clay pot and I'm having a hard time not grooving to it right now. That really is a catchy tune. A Hazardous Materials truck is parked across the street with it's red lights flashing. That's usually not a good sign.

Life is starting to settle down now that we've got all our stuff moved in and Kristi is all unpacked. She has done an amazing job arranging the house and decorating it, giving it that welcoming look. I am looking forward to having a house warming party, and starting to entertain guests. There are so many people I'd like to have over. Kristi was remarking the other day just how many of my friends or people I talk about she has never even met. As far as she knows, they could all be fictional characters in an elaborately constructed imaginary world, though I think that would give myself too much credit. It looks like the van is ready now.

First Guests
Entertaining for the first time in our new house
I am expecting my parents to arrive for lunch any time. While not really a big doo, it is the first time we will be officially entertaining guests in our new home. The place looks fantastic. It could be in a magazine. Kristi and I spent the better part of yesterday shopping, doing the last of our startup shop - picking up all the things you usually only need to buy once: A step ladder for the kitchen, Parmesan cheese, a new, cleaner (and even futuristic-looking) bird cage for my three budgies.
